Dear friends,
As I leave for my trip, I want to start by saying that in this farewell is the seed of our next hello. We will miss each other, but know in your heart that this merely means our next hello will be that much more pleasureful.
That is perhaps one of the greatest benefits of friendship — knowing that it awaits patiently, to be once again slipped into with ease as we resumed and continue our journeys.
And that I call you my friend is not something I take lightly. As Seneca writes
Think for a long time whether or not you should admit a given person to your friendship. But when you have decided to do so, welcome him heart and soul, and speak as unreservedly with him as you would with yourself.
That you accept my friendship makes me proud — together we shall make our journeys in the footsteps of Aristotle’s philia. It that which gives me strength and faith to journey away for a while — knowing there is always somewhere to go home to.
Renowned Jewish artist Leonard Albert Kravitz wondered “But what I really want to know is — are you gonna go my way?” What I can say is that for us – who call each other ‘friend’ – our ways will meet one day.
